Tabernas is a village in Almería, (Andalusia). It is built around an Arab fortress that dominates an arid landscape with palm trees, agaves, prickly pears and cacti. It is the only desert area of the European continent and the aspect of its landscape is striking.
This desert area reminds the desert of Arizona, and different filmmakers chose it to film movies. This is the case of the movie “Lawrence of Arabia”, “The Mercenary Septs”, “Indiana Jones”, “Les Pétroleuses”, etc. As well as high numbers of other westerns. It is called the “Mini Hollywood”.
About 20 kilometers south of Mojacar lies the natural park of Cabo de Gata, a volcanic wilderness, a mineral landscape where only rare agaves live and the greasy plants of the desert zones, but offering dozens of extremely varied beaches of which Some of which are only accessible on foot between Carboneras and the village of Cabo de Gata, passing by the volcanic reef of the sirens (Arrecife de la Sirenas) dominated by the lighthouse of Cabo de Gata, one of the most advanced places in the Mediterranean Sea of the peninsula Iberian.
